5 Tips to Survive 2017

So, it’s here. 2017. 2016 is gone and for better or worse a new calendar year has crept up on us.
For many it hasn’t been the best of years, Terror, Trump, Brexit and celebrity deaths plaguing us. However, 2017 is like a blank canvas: it has the potential to be a masterpiece.

1. Leave 2016 in 2016.

Although time is just our rotation of the sun, the new year is a brilliant excuse to dump the things and people who slow you down in life. Delete that ex’s number from your phone. Drop that person whose friendship doesn’t help you anymore. Leave negative people and memories behind. They will never truly be gone, but allowing them to no longer take over your life is the first step.

2. Keep things personal.

Brexit is happening. Trump is happening. War is happening. But that does not mean that your year has to be terrible. Attempt to see the world from a more personal perspective. It might seem selfish, but not allowing overarching issues to get you down will improve you for your relationship with others, which makes everyone happy. (I struggle with this. So I’m trying not to let Brexit get me down in 2017!) Focus your mind and energy on yourself and those around you. Your mind will be clearer and you will find yourself feeling more control over your happiness.

3. Keep goals realistic.

Big goals are amazing! But also often scary and daunting. We all know that your auntie isn’t going to give up chocolate for the year, she never does. But if she were to set the goal to eat one less chocolate digestive a day, then she would probably achieve that goal. You are already doing so well and as they say, don’t fix what’s not broken! Set yourself little goals, that you can see yourself achieving. (Mine is to attend a weekly yoga class.) Make your goals fun. Instead of depriving yourself of something (chocolate) give yourself something (more strawberries - or something that you love) These smaller, more positive goals will make your journey of self growth far more fun.

4. Be selfish!

You heard me. Be selfish. Make a list of things that you want to buy for yourself. A list for places you want to visit and a private list of personal things you would like to do that are just for you. Keep them somewhere you can find them, then when you have some extra cash and you don’t know what to spend it on, you have a whole list of things that you probably didn’t remember, that you probably still want. I’m striving for 2017 to be the year of self care. And it might seem wrong to be selfish, but being selfish in ways that make you happy often makes you a happier person, which benefits everyone!

5: Take care of yourself.

Life get’s tough and 2016 has worn a lot of people out (myself included). So, take some time to wonder what you could do for your body and mind. Keep it reasonable. My goal is to eat more fruit and veg in 2017, because I often feel better when I eat a little better. It doesn’t have to be physical. It might be reaching out to a friend or loved one about your mental health, or to ask for help. It is the most important part of life, to keep yourself happy and healthy, and no matter who is in office or what is going on in politics, your mind and body always take priority.
I hope you all have a great new year, and that these tips have been useful in some way. 2016 was hard, but it does not have to weigh you down. Make 2017 the year of personal growth and self care, you deserve it.
